challenge

Paylocity was building out a scheduler for their WebTime product when I joined the team. The goal was initially to build a drag & drop functionality into the system, but due to development restraints that would've hindered the launch, we couldn't add that level of interaction. How could we develop an enjoyable & intuitive scheduler within those limitations? As is usually the case, the restrictions drove our creative explorations.

strategy & solution

We came to the conclusion that to work inside of the limitations that were presented to us, we had to come up with an extensive design system within the overall Paylocity design system. We would ultimately create some features that would be added to the overall product design system, but we were also facing the reality that we'd have to add an immense amount of interactivity that would be unique to this product.
  • Create new design tokens that while unique to this product, would use the overall design language, and would be able to be utilized by other product teams if necessary.
  • Stakeholder interviews around client needs that we would need to solve.
  • Competitive analysis in the HCM space & beyond.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product & development to ensure design consistency & a quick, but stable launch.
